I have been on many treks and have always met people that have left me with an everlasting memory of themselves.
One of these was Boudewijn from Belgium. What a very tall and charming chap he was! And I especially loved the fact that when we slipped off our shoes to enter a monastery, the lining of his shoes screamed out the words "Prada". Yes. The guy had style. Real style.
His only style slip happened when he forgotten to pack a wide brimmed hat for the trek. One never forgets that sort of hat but he did. So he borrowed a spare one from a wonderful Scottish lady whose large green canvas camping hat looked rather comical above his designer clothing. Who knows what Boudewijn would have chosen for himself had he the chance, but he had to make do with this borrowed hat that made up with a lack of style with its purposeful functionality!!!
But that is not the reason I remember him. Oh no! My everlasting memory is of his very special lessons on ‘how to correctly position yourself for a photo’.
There is a knack you know, and I didn’t!!!!!
We had spoken, whilst crouched on our canvas stools over dinner, about the forthcoming wedding of my eldest son, and Boudewijn jumped to my aid to explain the ‘how to photo stance’. Since then every time I have a photo taken I silently thank him.
So there I am on the trek......
miles from anywhere in the Himalayan Mountains, learning my new skill. On the side of a cliff, around the campsite or whenever or wherever, I fervently practised the stance. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is worth perfecting if you ask me.
This stance, he assured me was the one the models use. Nothing like following in their gorgeous footsteps I say.
You see, I have a bit of a tendency to stand straight on and smile widely at the camera, and this is not very flattering as my thousands of previous photos attest.
The new stance actually works in delivering to the camera lens, you in your most attractive position. Believe me when I tell you that it works.
The key to it all is remembering to launch into the learnt stance whenever a camera is whipped out. You need to be able to immediately assume this position as though it comes to you naturally.
So luckily for you, I am about to share Boudewijns little photo secret!
Are you ready for the tip:
1. Look in the mirror and turn your whole body so you are facing to your right.
2. Your left leg will be closest to the mirror. Your legs should be a shoulder width apart.
3. Now turn the left foot so it faces towards the mirror.
4. Lean slightly onto the right leg.
5. Move your left shoulder towards the left so that your body is on an angle and not square on in the mirror. Relax and drop them slightly.
6. Lift your chin up a little and jut it slightly forwards.
7. Tummy in!
You might feel a little weird but the photos will reveal you looking your best. And don’t you want just that!!!!
So on with the practise girls and stagger your friends at just how brilliantly you scrub up in all the photos from now on.
Yes you can!!!!!
