Wise Women Blog Lana

Hi
Wise Women and Welcome

We are nearing the end of February and moving quickly into March, time is ticking by so I hope you are sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions!!

A New Year always inspires us to change and hopefully those changes involve happier and healthier lifestyles.

Laughter is a wonderful cure all, so make sure you are doing lots of it.

My Week

Me and my gorgeous daughter

Like Gigi, February is all about celebrating birthdays for me...lots of them, including my stunning daughter who turned 34 years young. We shared a lovely lunch with the family and a fun day was had by all.

It’s often hard to get a word in edgeways when we get together, is like that with your family too?

This week, I also enjoyed a trip to Melbourne, Melbourne is certainly a foodies paradise. I really enjoy food (too much) and was looking forward to a special luncheon at Silks restaurant in the Crowne Casino complex as it had been highly recommended to us.

The opulent restaurant overlooking the Yarra River offered first class Chinese cuisine and because of the recent Chinese New Year celebrations, we were presented with a sumptuous banquet – how could I refuse. 6 delicious courses later and I was feeling incredibly euphoric.

In my next life I want to be a food critic!

When I arrived back in Sydney we celebrated my father-in-law Ken’s birthday at a Chinese Yum Cha restaurant. As the trolleys laden with all kinds of delectable dim sum shunted past our table, I couldn’t resist trying most things, except for the chicken feet, which I left for my other family members to try. (I'm starting to realise that I have a "thing" for Chinese food).

Lana’s Update

On last week’s Wise Women’s Blog I reported on the fantastic but very wet Rob Thomas Concert I attended with my friend (and Acupuncturist) Dale at the open-air Hope Estate Winery and I just received a couple of pictures from her.

This one (below) is me looking very stylish in the latest "storm-wear" – sheer plastic ponchos.

 How glam!

In this next photo, have a look at the sky, this is just after the storm had passed.

Whitney Houston Concert.

Witney is one very glamorous woman but I am afraid that the majority of fans who attended her concert in both Brisbane and Sydney complained that her voice is not what it used to be.

I certainly feel compassion for Whitney as she must have sadly realised how disappointed her fans were at her performance. She would have also needed to come to terms with the fact that performing live may be a thing of the past for her.

I also feel for Whitney’s disappointed fans who paid enormous ticket prices to attend the show.

Are they entitled to some form of recompense?

On Friday night Gigi attended a fund raising event for Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.  The hospital, established by inspirational Australian doctor, Catherine Hamlin, works to change the lives of some of the world’s most destitute women in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Run completely on donations, the hospital treats nearly 3000 women every year suffering obstetric fistula. These young women have suffered obstructed childbirth without medical assistance and having lost their babies, are left with severe internal injuries.

Women, let’s get together and make a difference to these precious lives.

Me

Last weekend I travelled to the beautiful Hunter Valley which is about a 3 hour drive north of Sydney. This area is famous for its awarding winning wines and delicious olives, and this weekend it was raging with Rob Thomas fans.

Generously, I was invited to share in my friend’s (Dale) birthday celebration at the open air concert held at the enormous Hope Estate Winery.

A stormy weekend was predicted, however, I was delighted to see the sun shining when I arrived at our accommodation.

In fact it was a sweltering 34 degrees at 3pm.

We headed out to the concert around 5pm looking forward to a balmy but fabulous evening.

The vineyard was a sea of people enjoying a few wines and bopping to the support act when suddenly... a huge, black, angry cloud appeared from nowhere and hovered threateningly overhead.

CRACK....the thunder echoed loudly drowning out the music, and SNAP... the lightning struck wrathfully, briefly turning night into day.

The drenching rain fell in bucket loads as we scampered to find shelter.

Luckily, we were able to purchase flimsy, plastic ponchos in the hope of protecting ourselves from total saturation.

On such a warm night the plastic made us swelter but at least it kept us "dryish".

The crowd was warned to stay away from anything that could be electrified which was hard to do considering all of the sheltering stalls were made of steel and canvas!

Everyone around us, except for the seriously inebriated, were terrified of being struck by lightning,  however, my optimistic  and naive self thought ...what would be the chances of me being singled out and struck by lightning amidst thousands of other revellers??? hmm...

The storm eventually passed (hooray) and we tramped gracelessly through ankle deep mud as we reluctantly returned to our rain sodden seats.

In a flash, Vanessa Amorossi appeared on stage belting out her signature song to the loud roar of a damp but appreciative audience.

Of course... the show must go on.

Vanessa was certainly a powerhouse performer and a popular crowd pleaser.

The winery grounds rocked when Rob Thomas arrived on stage, he illuminated the drizzly, dark night with his amazing talent and his charismatic presence.

He also enthralled us all with his deep spiritual ideals.

Dale and I enjoyed a fabulous evening of entertainment even though we were ankle deep in mud and in Dale’s case, trickling blood from an unsteady fan who accidently but heavily stepped on her toes.

I was certainly a birthday celebration to remember!

The lyrics to Rob’s songs are still reverberating in my ears days after.

Love ya Rob!

Valentine’s Day

My hubby thinks it’s the latter, therefore, sadly, there were no red roses, chocolates or a mushy card for me.

I know how he feels about Valentine’s Day so I didn’t think it was necessary to shower him with gifts either.

However, he surprised me that evening by taking me out to a slap up lobster meal (my favourite)!

There is a little romance in him after all!

I'm a lucky girl...

Hi Wise Women

Hope you have been enjoying good health and are rewarding yourself with fun times.

My Week

Over the past week I’ve had the time of my life - it’s just been one big party.

I celebrated my 35 year wedding anniversary on Monday and on Friday I celebrated my brother-in-law’s birthday followed by my 55 year birthday on Saturday.

My elaborate birthday celebrations spanned the whole weekend.

Mr J and I stayed in the city at a very plush 5 star hotel and enjoyed all the spoils of residing on the executive level.

I know it may sound a little extravagant... but hey, turning 55 is quite something...

My birthday morning started with breakfast in bed (my favourite breakfast destination), followed by a trip to the city to check into our hotel and meet our children and grandchildren for a sumptuous seafood buffet lunch in the hotel’s ritzy restaurant.

The tantalising buffet selection was incredible, so many choices...

We all overindulged (as you do) particularly when it came to dessert.

Our stomachs were groaning with the overload and we were literally “stuffed”.

I vowed never to eat again...and within three hours we accepted an invitation to partake in complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the executive level function room - courtesy of the hotel.

Well, it’s difficult to knock back freebies!!

After a long, long weekend of severe over-indulgence, I’ve resigned myself to eating smaller portions from now on (I’m trying but I'm starving) as I’m still too afraid to step onto the scales until my ridiculously bloated body deflates.

My Health Report -

For those of you that have been a regular visitor to my column, you will know that I have recently been hospitalised for bowel issues and a haemorrhoidectomy. I can happily report that my plumbing is working well and my recovery has been rapid.

I visit my gastroenterologist for the first time this week since the operation and I’m pretty sure he won’t recognise my face...

(Take a moment to think about that!)

Face Up

Progress Report

Carolyn 62 years young

I’m well into Carolyn’s Facial Fitness program and I am spending 15 minutes each day contorting my face for a more youthful looking me.

(People who have talked to me over the phone are visibly shocked when they see me for the first time as they say I have a young voice...).

So you can understand that I have lots of work to do but happily, I can already see some improvements!

I’m also combining Carolyn’s Skin Care System with the exercise program. The products are organic and simply divine.

My complexion is starting to take on a new dewy appearance.
