My Week

This week, I immersed myself into a special project that is time consuming and challenging, although totally compelling. Isn’t it great to be doing something that you really love? I hope you follow your dreams too and do something that you are passionate about; it really puts a ZING back into your life.
Last week I also found time to socialise after receiving a few last minute invitations. Isn't it one of life’s pleasures to be able to spend time with people that you love and people that interest you? Idling away the hours, sharing a meal, conversations and a few laughs is certainly the elixir of life.
Even though I was feeling a little jaded last week (from a recent virus), being with positive people really helped energise me.
My grandchildren are always a source of enjoyment for me, I know I'm obsessed, but I really get such a kick out of watching them play and observing each one of them learning new skills.
Master 6 always amazes me with his technological knowhow, Miss 2 is an amazing dancer and she is so passionate about it – I think her future is already being mapped out. Master 15 months has been dubbed Bam Bam (from the Flintstone’s cartoon) as he is as strong as an ox and is always lifting up chairs and side tables – maybe a future weight-lifter?
Let us know about your grandchildren..

My Grandkids
Thankfully, as I mentioned earlier, I think I have finally overcome the flu (no not the Swine flu), and although it robbed me of a lot of energy at the time, I am starting to feel human again. During my illness I investigated foods that aid recovery and although I was religiously taking ascorbic acid I felt I needed more.
I was delighted to discover that oysters (yum) are a great source of zinc which is excellent for aiding the immune system and so are green, leafy vegetables, particularly spinach. Did you know that Kiwi fruit has more vitamin C that oranges and it is an effective anti-oxidant? Chicken soup still has warming and healing properties and of course lots of water helps flush out the nasties.
If you get a cold or flu, ensure you get plenty of bed rest, a lot of pampering and a good book to take your mind off the sniffling...it worked for me.
Sometimes a little bar of chocolate helps keep the mood brighter (my theory).
Beauty Tips

Three step guide to help banish those wrinkles -
Diet

A diet that is high in "natural" vitamins found in fresh foods can make a startling difference to how old you look.
Including antioxidant rich raw vegetables in your diet is a good start but there are a few foods in particular that can help you out.
Avocado is one of the best natural sources of vitamin E — a vitamin that helps maintain healthy skin and can reduce your cholesterol.
Avocado also contains a lot of potassium, which helps prevent fluid retention.
Fish oil is another age-busting super food. It has a high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. Found in cold water fish like salmon and tuna, these help out by stopping inflammation, restocking the brain with essential fats and maintaining the elasticity of your lungs.

Sun Safety

While sunlight is a good source of vitamin D, the damage it does to your skin can be catastrophic.
UV rays from sunlight account for approximately 90 percent of premature aging symptoms, including reduced skin elasticity and dryness.
If you keep a little covered up and you’re much less likely to need anti-aging care down the track.
Exercise

Obvious as it may seem, keeping fit will make you look and feel younger.
Increased energy and heart health are great bonuses but it also stimulates fat loss which contributes to healthier organ function and circulation.
Remember that from the age of about 30, you start to lose muscle mass and it becomes easier to instead gain fat mass and a slower metabolism.
By challenging your muscles you will build them and stop the degeneration process.
A set of exercised muscles will lead to less body fat, a higher metabolism, a healthier glow and a more youthful posture.

Macular Degeneration Awareness Week

Australia’s theme for this year's Awareness Week is "Macular Degeneration - don't be blind to the risks!" This theme has been used in promotional materials in conjunction with the ongoing theme of "How's your macula?"
We all need to take this matter seriously, as ageing can cause our eyesight to deteriorate.

Gigi had a harrowing week last week, when she was on the receiving end of a breast cancer scare. Luckily, all was clear for her but for many other women they are sadly not as lucky. Please ladies if you haven’t had a recent check up please do it now. Early detection is the key to survival.

Retirement Age to Rise
Australia's federal budget was revealed this week and it was a case of the GOOD the BAD and the UGLY...
The good news is that old age pensions would rise and that there is an expectation that we would be living longer.
The bad news is - the retirement age has been raised by 2 years - from 65 years of age until 67 and that unemployment will continue to rise.
The Ugly - we have record debt.
Overall, our pollies are predicting that the economy will improve in 2 years (let's hope they are right).
Let's not enter into the doom and gloom of the state of the economy let's try to talk it up and if we collectively send out our positive vibes, we may just cause a positive shift...
My Week

Well I am feeling sorry for myself as I have the dreaded lurgy, however, I am the last in the family to get it. I guess it's my turn to annoy ‘them’ with my sneezing, wheezing and sneaking off with the last tissue!
Well... I've taken positive action to fight this annoying virus. I'm religiously dosing myself with ascorbic acid, I’m eating copious amounts of chicken soup until I almost cluck, I'm nearly drowning myself by drinking massive amounts of water and I am trying my best to get some rest (I did say trying)....that combination of treatments usually does the trick! Here's to good health wise women!
Mother’s Day

My family enjoys trying something very different each Mother's Day and this year was no exception.
I decided to leave the arranging to Mr J who actually started the celebrations on Saturday by cooking my daughter-in-law and me a lavish breakfast of bacon and eggs...with all the trimmings. He said he needed to plan it this way because on Mother's Day he was taking us out for an early lunch, so he assumed that we would not be able to stomach the traditional celebratory breakfast as well...wise thinking Mr J.
Well Mother's Day arrived and I was presented with a delicious light breakfast and the Sunday newspapers with a special message of love and appreciation written on the front page from my thoughtful son TJ.
I also received flowers, motor cycle riding attire from my husband and a gift voucher from my children...for the motor cycle shop. I really think there has been some collaboration going on!! (My husband recently brought home the love of his life - a Harley Davidson and wants me to join him on road trips).
After being totally pampered, we headed off to a Japanese Teppanaki restaurant to enjoy lunch with my children and their families.
A word of warning...to those of you who have never experienced teppanaki cooking before - DON'T WEAR GOOD CLOTHES! I have been a victim of this theatrical style of cooking many times and again I was victimised. We all sat around a fiery barbeque plate (great in cold weather), as the chef prepared our food and cooked it right in front of our eyes. He amazed my grandchildren with his skilful juggling of the salt shaker and his attempts at flame throwing.

During the cooking process, we are all given the opportunity to catch a raw egg with our rice bowl. The chef, with his dastardly smile, spins the egg in the air like a seasoned first grade cricketer and it lands right into the bowl...well that's the idea anyway... Unfortunately, many of us have to adjourn to the bathroom after failing to catch the egg to scrape off the raw yoke from our best trousers!
It's time for our next challenge - to catch a piece of 'just cooked' omelette in our mouths...well, I don't know about you, but my mouth just doesn't seem to be that co-ordinated. I miss! And the burning hot omelette lands on my décolletage - ouch. He fires off another 3 pieces in succession and I become not only the cause of much amusement throughout the restaurant, I am also covered in egg...it's in my hair, down my top, egg everywhere.
How is it - that males can catch the omelette pieces in their mouths so adeptly?
One last challenge to master...this is my chance to redeem my dignity - I must catch the rice bowl full of rice. The chef tosses the bowl from some height... it rotates 3 times, my brow begins to perspire, I'm thinking...please catch it, bloody catch it and then suddenly - the rice gloriously lands right into my cusped hands...a thrilling moment!
I cheer and raise my arms in victory before catching sight of the embarrassed looking expressions of my whispering, fellow diners who obviously think my reaction was a bit over the top!

Anyway, although I left the restaurant with soiled clothes, I had a full tummy and wonderful memories of Mother's Day. Wonder where we will go next year?

Wise Women

I recently read an article about Olivia Newton John who just turned 60 and is an ambassador for the Australian's Women's Weekly 30 days of Health and Wellbeing that starts in June. Olivia just beams health and vitality! I wonder how she can appear so motivated and ‘together’ with all of the hardships that she has endured throughout her life. Many of these adversities have also been played out in the public eye.
She has suffered divorce, cancer (the loss of Chloe's best friend), her own battle with breast cancer and the death of her mother through cancer. She has also endured her daughter Chloe's battle with anorexia and her own dark periods of depression after the disappearance of her boyfriend of 8 years, camera man Patrick McDermott in 2005.
Olivia has certainly been put through the mill and has come up trumps with her recent marriage to soul mate John Easterling and her personal triumph of climbing the Great Wall of China for charity. She also manages to work tirelessly, fund raising for the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre and her breast cancer early detection awareness efforts, including the self examination kit.
Olivia's life is back on track, she is just glowing with health and vitality, she is happily married and her beautiful daughter is also a picture of good health. Olivia you are an inspiration to all of us!
